Built as a temporary structure, Mr. Eiffel’s tower has been in place for nearly 130 years. Constructed for the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) of 1889, it was the tallest man-made structure for 41 years. Of course, over the century, it has become a cultural icon, the symbol of Paris and one of the world’s most recognizable structures.
Looking straight up from beneath the tower, we can see the netting that keeps falling objects from making a mess of the tourists (and photographers, I suppose).
