This beautiful African bird is the Lilac Breasted Roller. It is stunning while simply resting on a branch but it’s even more spectacular when flying. All of our guides told us that it’s “the most photographed bird in Africa”. That may be so, but it took me two weeks of repeated tries to catch one with its wings spread. When spotting one perched, I would wait and wait for it to fly but it wouldn’t budge. If I turned away, for even a second, it would be gone. That’s how it went for nearly the entire safari. Then one afternoon I spotted one. It fluttered quickly and it was all over in a second. I managed a couple of images and this was the only good one. This is one of one. Dumb luck, if you ask me.
