Let your imagination run wild! Rather than have it spoon-fed to you, sometimes it’s completely up to you to make up your own story about a photograph. Maybe, just maybe, there is more going on here than simply a pretty picture.
Something is happening behind that huge glass wall as human forms move both right and left and then disappear from view. For me, this image of the D’Orsay Museum in Paris has always suggested a story of fin de siècle, 19th century time-travel. Like some sort of temporal station out of HG Wells, it’s as if we are witnessing the indistinct forms of travelers who are making their way from one epoch to another. Their missions and identities shrouded in mystery, they go about their secret business. One moment they are in the here and now. The next, they are somewhere either back in history or into the future. Some are returning from a distant time, having accomplished what they set out to do. The only thing we know for sure is the present time as shown on the huge ornate clock. It’s the one thing that makes concrete sense, something recognizable… The rest are only shadows.
