An American Bison. These grumpy guys have been described as having a “wild and ungovernable temper”. They can be much quicker than they look and can jump a 6 foot fence. The last thing anyone needs is 1500 pounds of “angry” coming after them so we give bison their space. That’s why we have long lenses! Mostly they are just interested in grazing on lush grasses.
This noble looking specimen is part of a vast herd along the Lamar River in Yellowstone. Maybe he’s looking at the horizon and contemplating his destiny. Maybe he’s counting the curious bipeds that are starting to gather. Probably though, he’s keeping track of the twenty or so members of his local social group off to the right of this image.
I don’t know what it is about these huge, powerful survivors of the American West but they always make me smile.
