4 to 5 tons of Elephant Seals battle for dominance in a rookery along the California coast. Yes, there is a bit of blood but these conflicts rarely result in severe injuries. Without something in the picture for scale, it’s hard to appreciate how large these animals are. In this image, from the sand to the tops of the heads of these two is approximately six feet and each of these males is 4,000 to 5,000 pounds. And it’s easy to forget that these big, powerful and ungainly creatures on land are swift, weightless and graceful while spending most of their lives in the ocean.
