Another iconic feature of Death Valley are the shifting dunes of sand found in isolated areas of the valley floor. With endless textures, patterns, shapes and shadows, they are a constant inspiration and challenge for photographers.
This image features a part of Mesquite Dunes. It’s a popular site for tourists and is usually heavily tracked by hikers (and photographers!). A great time to go is after a wind storm when all of the tracks are wiped clean. With no winds at all, I was lucky to find an isolated spot devoid of footprints.
