Face Off

face off

January is a great time of year to visit an Elephant Seal rookery. It’s fascinating to witness these huge animals’ territorial behavior as they test each other for a little space on the beach. Sometimes the confrontations can get quite animated and dramatic. Most of the fighting damage is done to the outer skin layers and is not life threatening. The big cut you see behind the flipper of the seal on the left is the result of a shark attack.

In this image, there is about to be a physical confrontation. I love the anticipation of what is about to happen. Hint: The older one on the left with the bigger proboscis chases the noisy challenger away.
