It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No! It’s a flying crawdad!
It only took a moment for the great egret to snatch this crawdad from the bottom of the pond. There was a splash, water droplets everywhere, the crawdad was in the egret’s mouth and then inexplicably it managed its flying escape.
This image was captured on a warm spring day at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in northern California.
