If you’ve hiked other sand dunes, White Sands will surprise you. Yes, it’s much whiter and brighter, but you’ll be expecting that. The big difference you will notice right away is that you don’t sink into the sand. It’s more like walking on hard packed snow. (The Visitor Center there actually sells sleds!) I tracked over this gypsum dune several times before taking this picture. If I did that on any other pile of sand you’d see every footfall. Here? Nada.
